About Begin
Why I built this
In a decade of private practice, I prepared wills and incapacity planning documents for hundreds of clients — and I watched just as many people put it off, not because they didn’t care, but because getting it done felt complicated and expensive. Years ago I built a simple web app so my own clients could prepare a basic will-based plan (it has since been retired), and I later worked on estate planning products from the inside as product counsel.
Begin is the version I always thought could exist, given enough of my personal time and resources. It is a gift, first and foremost, to my friends and family. It is the culmination of thousands of hours of experience and tinkering — my domain knowledge and expertise, plus an obsession with building a document engine that unbundles documents from advice when personal circumstances require it.
I still believe the true value of planning is in the collaboration and advice you get when engaging experienced professionals. But I recognize that, for many, they need the documents and cannot afford the advice. Begin is for that.
